This seriously needed a sensitivity reader. The author uses words like “normal” fingers when discussing a differently-abled person and commits the cardinal sin of having a character refer to themselves as “clean,” when they mean negative in the case of STIs. A good LGBTQ+ copy editor could have saved her from that last, and I’m very disappointed in Dreamspinner Press for allowing it through, as their big—if not only— focus is LGBTQ+ romance. I looked forward to reading this but got crap. The only reason I’m not returning it is because I want to make sure my review is accessible and others can be forewarned, if this sort of thing is upsetting to them as well. I don’t believe I’ve ever read a werewolf Bk before, CERTAINLY not on purpose. And yet this book was a #1 best seller, it’s blurb was hilarious, and it just made me think of like maybe of combo of Chuck and The Big Bang Theory (referenced by the author at the end of the novel. That and The Avengers. Even if I HADNT loved the Bk, I would have automatically raised my review just on that basis alone!). But I digress.While I’m not as familiar with the paranormal as many others who will read this Bk, perhaps my perspective will be helpful for those who, like me, had nothing whatsoever as a foundation for this novel. To sum it up quickly, you don’t need one. I have read a few omegaverse novels and the occasional, sporadic vampire book and you do, indeed, need some background (at least for the books I happened to choose). So I was pleasantly surprised that my lack of knowledge was not a factor in enjoying the novel.Indeed, it would be almost exactly like an early episode of Chuck if his knowledge was required NOT for the government but for werewolves, and the love interest happened to be a handsome man instead of a really pretty woman. Bc that’s what basically occurs. There’s an tragic incident with the werewolves and they suddenly realize that they are missing wizards or, as they say, “tech support”. The existing werewolves are really excellent at fighting but not as bright as they need to be to figure out sophisticated magical solutions. And not speaking of TBBT, they head off to Comic-Con to find their first recruit. I swear to God.Not surprisingly, the “recruits” are not actually given a real choice in the matter and so they are not at all pleased at the situation. (As one might expect.). The book contains humor, sex, true emotion, bonding (like friendship or emotional, not whatever the other kind is), magic, demons, faeries, and a family not all that different from my own. In that it’s totally dysfunctional. And, oh yes, a HEA. At least I think so. It was clear that the story continued on after this book ended. A cliffhanger, if you will. But it didn’t feel like a cliffhanger for the main couple.It was just funny, kooky, and filled w martyrs. I loved it!!
